Career perceptions are changing fast

If you happen to interact with the fresh graduates you will find them bubbling with energy. They are very open and broadminded about their future. Gone are the days, when we only used to have limited options for the graduating students. In the gone by era, the parents used to be forcing children into the three prime categories of doctors, engineers and chartered accountants. The other options used to be the civil services, bank probationary officers, scientists, and management careers etc. People had the clout to get their children engaged into some job or the other in order to get his life run smoothly.

Career perceptions-3Change in workable options: Broadly speaking the thoughts of the older generations have remained the same. Then what has changed? For one, the population of the country has swelled over the years making the competition tougher for the individuals. Secondly, the world has opened out with the drive for globalization has brought many avenues within the country. Thirdly, the internet has created in a variety of options for the discerning individuals.

Career perceptionsNot ready to take anything sitting down: The points that are mentioned above are something that you are already aware of. But there is a major perception change among the generations that are graduating now. It is already being felt by many of us. The children in the family have seen their parents toil hard to make an earning. Somewhere down the line, they have seen them working for 12 to 16 hours a day in the jobs without much recognition and reward for their effort. They are not ready to undergo the hard toil for someone else’s benefit. That precisely is a major shift in the thinking process.

Career perceptions-4Greater risk taking ability: The generations that are graduating from the premier colleges are today much more confident than their peers. While many of them prefer to set up their own start-ups and businesses, the others pick and choose the job options to their liking. But, do you know that most of the job seekers also have greater plans in mind than just doing the routine jobs. This is another striking change of perception.

Career perceptions-5Foreign universities: The fresh graduates work for a period of 2 years maximum in the first jobs. They have plans for moving out of the country using the GRE, GMAT and TOEFL options and for carrying out a higher study curriculum in that country. They are able to get the information quickly from the internet about the possible expenses, scholarships, loans from banks, and how to earn a living while studying in the foreign land. The parents are also helping out now to ensure that their children get into foreign universities, even at undergraduate levels.

Career perceptions-6Skilling up within the country: The others, who do not have such high-flying perceptions, restrict themselves to higher education within the country. This could be by the way of going in for a Masters in management or by selecting a course to upgrade the IT software skills. The students have fully understood the importance of additional skills and degrees for their careers. Nobody wants an MBBS only doctor. In the same manner, the individuals having specializations and higher educational qualifications are likely to be on a path of career growth which is satisfying, rewarding and to their liking.Career perceptions-1

  7. The risk taking ability of the new generation has definitely improved. This is based on the financial well being of the prior generation. Wherever there is poverty the risk taking ability is low. But with the increase in opportunities the world has opened up for the brave heart.

  8. The avenues for skilling up have increased tremendously in the country. One has however to be very clear on the choice of the skill which should gel with his or her initial qualifications.

  9. My son has scored well in TOEFL and GRE exams, but there seems to be a change of heart now. He is finding the post graduate management degree programs within the country to be much better. The new generation is finding its own route.

  10. The article has brought out the changed perceptions correctly. Neither me nor my colleagues are interested in staying back after the office hours are over. This generation is a no-nonsense generation.

Also, they are much more informed about what is happening around the world and the right career path for them. Both of them are ready to take the risks to set their careers on the right path. I agree with the author of this article that career perceptions have definitely changed.

  15. I agree with the author of the article. The dissatisfaction level with the current jobs is increasing fast in the younger generation. They are on the lookout for jobs where the work is to their liking. In fact, they want to do what they like and get paid for it and are impressed by movies like “3 idiots.” They are however far moved from reality. No body pays for what you like to do.
