How to face the job interview?

Facing the interviewYour resume has been shortlisted and it is time for your interview. Your success or failure in the interview will be the deciding factor for your selection. There are some basic things that are necessary when you appear for an interview:

  • Reach the interview venue 15 minutes before the scheduled time.
  • Dress aptly for the interview.
  • Prepare for the interaction in advance.
  • You can get some more details under preparing for the job opportunity. Take a sneak peek.

These basics look trivial in nature but may cause irreparable damage to your prospects if not taken care of.

Facing the interview-1Confidence is the key: Inside the interview room, the people at the other end are monitoring your body language. They notice the way you enter the room and greet them. They watch how confidently you answer the questions. The initial nervousness may be discounted but they want you to answer the question only if you know the answer. It is better to say, “I do not know the answer,” rather than making a half-hearted attempt to answer it and earn negative points.

Handle with care: You will also have to gauge who among the interviewers is calling the shots. The easy way to find it is by way of the attention given to the boss when he asks the questions. Listen carefully when they introduce themselves and pay attention to the hierarchy and you will know the top shot. However, there is a possibility that you may satisfy the MD of the company when the decision maker is the Vice President. A certain amount of diplomacy is required when answering the interview questions. Do not ignore anyone and give importance to the questions asked by all the interviewers.

Facing the interview-3Describe yourself: In very rare cases, the CV submitted to the company is read by the interviewers. The shortlisting is carried out by an external agency or the HR of the company who operate under some guidelines. You will be asked to tell about yourself, that covers your family, educational background and work experience. It is up to you to make it short, sweet and effective.

Facing the interview-4Hit the target: The next set of questions will be technical and will relate to your work area handled in the last company. These questions will make the difference to your scoring the brownie points. The depth of your knowledge is going to be tested and you better be thorough with your area. Those who make their impression at this juncture are likely to make the grade.

Facing the interview-5Popular question: A favourite question asked by the interview team is related to your unique selling point (USP). This can be a differentiator and may put you way ahead of competition. It is advisable to be well prepared with the answer.

Cakewalk: The last few questions are follow through questions and you are aware of them beforehand. Here is the question and answer session:Why you want to leave the company?

  • Q) Why do you want to leave the company?
  • A) I want to do it for my career growth.
  • Q) Why you cannot grow your career in your previous company?
  • A) I feel that due to lack of opportunities there.
  • Q) What gives you the impression that you will get better opportunities here?
  • A) I have gone through your website and talked to some experienced hands who have guided me rightly.

Facing the interview-7Take care: There is a special word of caution for the people who have been given the pink slip from the previous organization. You can read some more tips on facing the interview in case you are between jobs. If the gap is more you will have to show that you have acquired a new skill or carried out some freelance work in that time. This is enough to convince the interviewer that you are serious about the job.Facing the interview-8

  3. It is very true that despite having the CV in front of them the interviewers want to listen about your profile. They are probably wanting to check whether you know what you have written in your CV. Many people who get their bio-data made externally easily fall in a trap.

  4. It is important to have a unique selling proposition (USP), something which you can brag about confidently in the interview.

I would like to know more about facing questions regarding leaving previous job. I had to put my paper because of differences with a client where I was working as a facility manager (technical). The fact that I am currently not working induces a negative curiosity in the interviewers’ minds and I have to do a lot of acrobatics to answer this question. I am out of job since one and half months which may not make the interviewer to ask what I had been doing for this period but the pink slip puts me in a fix. Please help.

  18. Though we follow a formal dress code for the interview but the times have changed now. Mark Zukerberg of Facebook wears jeans to the office and is quite casual about his dress. If you have an interviewer like him he might not pay much attention to what you are wearing. He will concentrate on the knowledge and experience part and may select you on that basis. The point is that the dress may be discounted if you are thorough about your work area.

I suggest its good to reach 15min before scheduled interview, not just to impress by your punctuality but you get time to relaxe yourself, self motivate and be confident to give interview.
Sometimes the interviewer ask about yourself and they might say your work experience or industry is different. So you try to show how best you can serve their organisation and present your profile.
They will like your ‘can-do’ attitude. Also build a friendly atmosphere in conversation.
