How to turn around an interview in your favour

interview turn around-1If you have the experience of appearing for interviews you would have tasted both success and failure. At times, you would have felt that the interview is slipping out of your hands. You can judge the outcome of the interview by keenly watching the body language of the interviewer. You will get many tell-tale signs if there is dissatisfaction at the other end. It may not be very evident to the ones who appear for the interview the first time but becomes clear to those who become experienced in this art. Let us look at some techniques which can help you to turn the tide in your favour.

interview turn around-2Gain time: If you cannot remember the answer to a question, gain time by repeating the question. You not only get additional time to rethink the answer but also the interviewer would correct you in case you have understood the question wrongly. You can also seek a clarification by communicating how you have interpreted the question. The interviewer may give you a direction or hint which can make the answer click in your mind.

interview turn around-3Admit your mistake: In case, you have given a wrong answer and suddenly realised the blunder, admit your mistake and apologise. Take a deep breath and then confidently recite the correct solution. The interviewer knows that people can make mistakes out of nervousness or otherwise. They will be happy once they see that you admit your weaknesses and have no qualms in asking for an apology. This is treated as an affirmative trait for improvement.

interview turn around-4Turn the tide: If you see a frown on the face of the interviewer check with him if you are answering correctly. It is also possible that the interviewer starts showing disinterest. Bring him back by asking him for his feedback on your answers. In both the cases, you will get the direction from the interviewer and also get him back in the interview. In the senior level interviews, you can ask if you are addressing the needs or if they want a different approach. All this helps in turning the tide in your favour once again.

interview turn around-5Correct the course: It should be your endeavour to take the interview in the direction of your strong points. If it is a successful project or a milestone achievement that brought about a transformation, steer the interview in that direction whenever you get a chance. You can also use the silent moments in an interview to barge in with filler that can help you in bringing up your strong point or USP.

interview turn around-6Communication and body language: In the initial introduction you must catch the names of the interviewers clearly while shaking hands with them. Addressing the interviewer by name in the beginning, middle and end of the interview shows your involvement. Keep your body language positive and avoid gesturing too much. In case you are nervous and shaking your leg, take a deep breath and release your stress. Nobody is going to kill you for a bad performance. So, move ahead with confidence.

interview turn around-7It always helps to do a mock run up of the interview with a friend or relative a day prior to the actual interview. You may be able to gain insights about your shortcomings and also correct your stance wherever required.interview turn around
